Functional Medicine in Portland

Care that looks for what's behind your symptoms.

Functional medicine at Origins Integrative Health helps Portland patients who feel like their symptoms have never been fully explained. Your doctor looks at how your body systems connect, using your health story and lab testing to find what’s driving how you feel. Visits are available at our clinic on SE Ankeny St or by telehealth.

What functional medicine is

Functional medicine asks why a symptom is happening, not only how to quiet it. Fatigue, digestive trouble, hormone shifts and skin changes are often connected, and looking at them together can reveal a clearer path forward.

At Origins, functional medicine is part of how our naturopathic doctors practice. Your plan may include lab testing, nutrition, herbal medicine, supplements, lifestyle changes and prescription medication when it’s needed.

What functional medicine can help with

Patients often come to us for functional medicine when they have:

  • Ongoing fatigue or low energy
  • Digestive concerns such as bloating, IBS or SIBO
  • Hormone and thyroid concerns
  • Autoimmune conditions
  • Skin concerns such as acne or eczema
  • Several symptoms that seem unrelated

A Cleveland Clinic study published in JAMA Network Open found that patients cared for in a functional medicine model reported greater improvement in their physical health at six months than patients in standard primary care.

Your first visit

Your first visit is longer than a typical appointment, because we want the whole picture. We’ll talk about your symptoms, your history, your diet, sleep and stress, and what you’ve already tried.

From there, we decide together which labs make sense and build a plan around your goals. Follow-up visits are where we review your results and adjust as you go.

In person or telehealth

You can see your doctor at our SE Portland clinic or online. For telehealth, you need to be in a state where your provider is licensed. Dr. Heather and Dr. Laura are licensed in Oregon, and Dr. Carly is licensed in Oregon and Washington.

Who provides functional medicine at Origins

Dr. Heather Krebsbach, ND, LAc, Dr. Laura Clevenger, ND and Dr. Carly Martin, ND are naturopathic doctors who bring a functional medicine approach to every visit. All three take time to listen and connect the dots across your health.

Insurance varies by provider, and each provider page lists their current plans.

Functional medicine is at the heart of our naturopathic medicine. Many patients also explore hormone therapy or vitamin injections as part of their plan. You can also read what your first visit with a naturopathic doctor is like. When you’re ready, contact us to book a visit.

What is the difference between functional medicine and naturopathic medicine?

They overlap a great deal. Naturopathic doctors are licensed to diagnose, order labs and prescribe in Oregon, and ours use a functional medicine approach to look for the root of your symptoms.

What kind of lab testing do you use?

It depends on your symptoms and goals. Your doctor will explain which tests make sense for you and walk you through the results.

Can functional medicine work alongside my primary care doctor?

Yes. We're happy to coordinate with your other providers so everyone works from the same picture.

Do you offer functional medicine by telehealth?

Yes, as long as you're in a state where your provider is licensed at the time of your visit. Dr. Heather and Dr. Laura see patients in Oregon, and Dr. Carly sees patients in Oregon and Washington.
