Finding a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner in Portland Who Takes Your Insurance
By Hilary Duvauchelle, PMHNP, Origins Integrative Health, Portland
If you're looking for a psychiatric nurse practitioner in Portland, you've probably already done the hard part: deciding it's time to get help. Then comes the part that wears people down. Searching an insurance directory, calling offices that aren't taking new patients, and wondering if the person you finally reach will actually listen.
This article is here to make that easier. It covers what care with a psychiatric nurse practitioner looks like at Origins and which insurance plans we accept. It also gives you a few quick steps to confirm your benefits before your first visit.
If you're in crisis or thinking about suicide, call or text 988 (988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline), any time. If you are in immediate danger, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room.
What a psychiatric nurse practitioner does
A psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP) is an advanced practice nurse with graduate training in mental health. In Oregon, a PMHNP can assess, diagnose and treat mental health conditions and prescribe medication.
For many people, that means one provider who can sort out what's going on and explain it clearly. When medication is the right fit, the same provider manages it over time. Care can cover anxiety, depression, ADHD, mood conditions and more.
What care feels like at Origins
Patients often tell Hilary they've finally found a provider who truly listens.
Our psychiatric nurse practitioner care starts with a full assessment. We talk about what you're feeling and how long it has been going on. We also ask about sleep, energy, your health history and any medications or supplements you take. The goal is to understand you as a whole person before deciding on a plan.
From there, your plan is built around you. Medication may be part of it. So may support for sleep, nutrition, stress and other parts of your health that affect how you think and feel. This functional medicine approach looks for what's contributing to your symptoms while still focusing on real relief.
Your plan isn't fixed. Follow-up visits are where we check what's working and adjust, so your care keeps up with you.
Because Origins brings mental health and whole-body care under one roof, your plan can also include counseling or our naturopathic doctors when that helps. You can read more about how that teamwork looks in our article on anxiety and depression treatment in Portland.
Care for every age
Hilary sees children, teens and adults for all conditions, including ADHD. Families often appreciate having one provider who understands both the clinical side and the everyday realities of school, work and home.
Her experience also includes anxiety, mood conditions, women's mental health through pregnancy, postpartum, perimenopause and menopause, and care that is trauma-informed and LGBTQ+ affirming.
In person and online
Your first medication management visit with Hilary is in person at our SE Portland clinic. After that, many follow-up visits can happen by telehealth, which makes ongoing care easier to fit into a busy week.
One legal note: Hilary is licensed in Oregon, so you need to be in Oregon at the time of any virtual visit.

How to confirm your benefits before your first visit
Coverage can vary between plans from the same insurer, so a quick check up front saves surprises later.
- Have your plan details ready. Your member ID and the name of your specific plan, not just the insurance company.
- Call the member services number on your card. Ask whether Hilary is in-network with your plan and what you'll owe for a first visit and follow-ups. Ask too whether you need a referral or prior authorization.
- Call us at (503) 314-2176. Our front desk will confirm on our side and help you with anything that doesn't match.
If you run into trouble with your insurer, Oregon's Division of Financial Regulation offers free help with insurance questions.
